The Story
As the coronavirus began to appear in the US, I invited my extended family to a conference call to talk about preparation, experiences, and feelings. I think they found it reassuring.
Of the many things we could have done for our isolated grandparents, nothing would have lifted their spirits and comforted them more.
Nothing.
I decided to re-launch a service my company had shelved a decade ago called KinCall—conference calling for family—and encourage people to use it.
My parents, who are in their 90’s, wouldn’t be able to use a fancy app, but I told my mom, “You just dial a number and enter a PIN.” It’s so easy anybody can do it.

How do I sign up?

What is a KinCall ID?
A KinCall ID consists of a unique phone # and seven-digit PIN combination. It will belong to your family forever.
How do I start a conference call?
At the chosen time, everyone just dials the phone number. They’ll hear, “Welcome to KinCall, where families connect. Please enter your passcode.” Enter the PIN using the keypad. That’s it. Everyone who dials that unique phone number and PIN combination will be joined to the conference and you’ll hear chime-ins as they join.
What will it cost?
KinCall is only 3¢ /minute/person, up to a maximum of $10/conference call.
Is there a maximum number of participants?
Yes, 20. More on request.
How long can calls go?
Up to 120 minutes. More on request.
Can I dial out internationally?
No. International parties will have to dial in to the US phone number.
How do people join the call from outside the US?
Each country has a unique code you need to dial to get OUT of the country. You need to dial that number first, then 1 (that is the US county code) then the 10-digit phone number.
